Many people who come to pagan, earth-centered religions do so because of unfortunate experiences in more traditional, patriarchal institutions. Because of this, many of these people have a difficult time accepting the male aspects of the Divine; some go so far as to focus entirely on the female, revering and/or worshipping the goddess exclusively. And while this is understandable and, in all possibility, a healing way to experience deity for some, the duality of the universe is represented in the male and female, the God and Goddess. In order to maintain balance in my life, at least, it is necessary to acknowledge both.
