Wiccaning
Question:
I was just wondering whether there was such a thing as a pagan god parent?? I
really love the idea of godparents. However I do not want my child to be
baptized. Also, I wouldn't know how to go about making it official, any tips you
might have for a nice ritual would be really lovely.
Answer:
It is customary, in some forms of Wicca and Witchcraft, to
perform what is sometimes called a "Wiccaning Ritual" for a new child. It is
something similar to a baby dedication, or baptism, although unlike these, it
doesn’t purport to ‘lock’ the child into the spiritual path of the parents. Many
of these rituals include godparents in the ceremony. I, too, think that the idea
of having godparents for our children is a great idea.
I have included the text of one such ritual I found on the web, as well as a few
links to some other ones. Try a search on Google or other search engine for
‘Wiccaning Ritual’ to find more. These can be used as is, or adapted to your own
desires.
